Glass or aluminium pool fencing

Glass pool fencing

Clear panels let you watch the pool from the house or the deck, and they don't block the view of the yard.

Aluminium pool fencing

Aluminium bars with a tough powder-coat paint finish, usually black. It costs less than glass and suits a family backyard.

Pool gates

The gate swings on hinges that pull it shut, and the latch catches by itself, every time.

What happens on a pool fence job

  1. Measure

We measure the run around the pool and note where the gate goes and what's nearby that could be climbed.

  2. Quote

You get a written price for the glass or aluminium fence and its gate.

  3. Install

Panels go in at the right height and spacing, and the gate is hung so it shuts and latches.

  4. Inspection

Your inspector checks the finished barrier and issues the certificate for the council.

Victoria's pool barrier rules in plain words

Victorian law says any pool or spa able to hold over 30 centimetres of water must have a safety barrier around it. It also has to be registered with the council.

The barrier is inspected by a registered building surveyor or pool inspector. After that, once every four years, you send the council a fresh certificate of barrier compliance, which shows the barrier passed its latest check.

The barrier has to be at least 1.2 metres high, with a clear space outside it that kids can't climb on. We build to those heights; the inspection and certificate are done by the inspector.

A new barrier also has to meet the Australian Standard for pool safety barriers, AS 1926.1-2012, and its gate must be self-closing and self-latching. That is the standard your inspector checks the fence against.

Pool fencing questions

Can you give me the pool barrier certificate?

That comes from a registered building surveyor or pool inspector, who checks the barrier and issues it. We build the fence ready for that check.

Can the boundary fence form one side of the pool barrier?

Sometimes. A boundary fence used as a pool barrier has its own height and climbing rules. Tell us at the quote and we'll look at it with you.

Glass or aluminium: which is cheaper?

Aluminium usually costs less than glass for the same length. Ask for both and you'll get each price in writing.
