The parts of a Colorbond fence

Three parts make up a Colorbond fence: steel posts concreted into the ground, rails running between them, and ribbed sheets called infill that slot into the rails.

BlueScope bakes the colour onto the steel at its factory. Rot and termites aren't a problem with steel, so the posts and sheets hold up in Epping's heavy clay.

It's the same colour on both sides, so you and your neighbour see the same fence.

Colorbond fence options in Epping

A Colorbond fence is usually a straight run along a back or side boundary. You can add any of these to it.

Lattice or slat tops

A strip along the top adds a little height and lets some light through. Check the total height against the 2 metre permit limit.

Matching gates

We can make side and driveway gates from the same steel, in the same colour as the fence.

A fence on a retaining wall

On a sloping block we can build a sleeper wall first and run the Colorbond fence along its top.

Fixing a section

Storm damage or a dented panel? New sheets, rails and posts come from the current range. Faded sheets may not match exactly.

Installing your Colorbond fence, step by step

  1. Mark the line

We stretch a string tight along the boundary so the fence goes in straight and on the right spot.

  2. Old fence out

The old fence comes down and goes to the tip. Asbestos sheeting needs a licensed removalist first.

  3. Posts in concrete

We dig the post holes, stand each post plumb, which means dead upright, and set it in concrete. Rock in the hole takes longer, and we tell you at the quote if we expect it.

  4. Rails and sheets

Once the concrete has set, the rails go on and the sheets slot in. We clean up the steel filings so they can't leave rust spots.

Colorbond fencing on new estates around Epping

Many estates set the fence in the contract of sale. Fellow in Wollert asks for Colorbond side and back fences up to 1.8 metres, stopping 1 metre behind the front wall, with no front fence.

Other estates ask for timber instead, so check your guidelines before you pick a colour. Send us the estate name and we'll quote what they ask for.

Looking after a Colorbond fence

Rain keeps most of a Colorbond fence clean. Where rain doesn't reach, like under eaves or behind shrubs, BlueScope says to hose it at least twice a year. Use mild soapy water and a soft brush on dirt that won't shift.

Skip touch-up paint, because it fades at a different rate to the factory colour and can leave patches.

Colorbond fencing questions

How high can a Colorbond fence be without a permit?

In the City of Whittlesea, a side or back fence can reach 2 metres with no building permit. Front fences and fences close to a street corner have lower limits. Many estates also cap fences at 1.8 metres.

Does a Colorbond fence come with a warranty?

Yes. BlueScope backs the Colorbond steel itself, and how long that cover lasts depends on where the fence stands, so check the terms on colorbond.com. Our three-year workmanship warranty sits on top of that.

Colorbond or timber for an Epping back fence?

Colorbond is solid steel that never needs painting and looks the same from both yards. Timber can be stained or painted, and lapped palings, where each board overlaps the next, stay private as the timber dries out. On an estate, the design guidelines often make the choice for you.

Will my neighbour see the same colour?

Yes. A Colorbond fence is the same colour on both sides, so it's worth agreeing on the colour with your neighbour first.

Can you fix one damaged panel?

Usually, yes. We replace the dented sheets, rails or posts with new ones from the current range. If your fence has faded, the new sheets may look a little brighter for a while.
