Fences for Lalor's postwar homes

Lalor began in 1946, when a group of ex-service personnel formed the Peter Lalor Home Building Cooperative to build cheap homes. They hired town planner Saxel Tuxen to lay out a garden suburb near the station.

The suburb has since grown west to the Hume Freeway, with linear parks along the Darebin and Edgars creeks.

Older homes here often have a side gate, a low front fence and timber boundaries that have been patched over the years. We can quote all of those in one visit.

Permits and overlays in Lalor

Lalor is in the City of Whittlesea, and the usual limits apply: 2 metres for side and back fences, and lower near the street and corners.

  • Backing onto Edgars or Darebin Creek? A landscape overlay, a planning rule that protects the creek's look, can mean a new fence needs a planning permit.
  • Part of Lalor near the railway was the Westgarthtown settlement, which has heritage listings.
  • Need your neighbour's details? The council can give you their name and mailing address in writing, and it can take up to five business days.

These rules come from Whittlesea council and its planning rules, and they can change.

Fencing questions from Lalor

Can you replace just the side gate?

Yes. We hang new side gates in timber or steel, or rehang one that's dropped so it latches again.

My fence runs along the creek path. Do I need a permit?

Maybe. Since 2026, overlays along Edgars and Darebin creeks can mean a new fence needs a planning permit. Open, low fences more than 50 metres from the bank are exempt, and VicPlan, the state's free property map, shows if your address is covered.

Can the new side gate go in with the new fence?

Yes. One quote covers the gate, the new boundary fence and taking the old timber to the tip, and the gate goes in as part of the same job. An old fence with asbestos in it has to be removed by a licensed asbestos removalist before we start.
